Industry shares had yet another difficult day yesterday as London’s equity markets declined for the third day in succession.

The FTSE 100 index lost 6.5 points to close at 4221.7 – a decline of 0.2 per cent – while the broader-based FTSE 250 suffered a more serious reverse and lost 0.8 per cent of its value, slipping 43.1 points to end the day at 5621.7. One of the busiest days in recent weeks saw 3.8 billion shares bought and sold.

Among the airlines, in the wake of news of a tie-up with Swiss, British Airways fell back 6.25p to close at 178p. EasyJet lost 7.25p for a 229.5p finish, and Ryanair closed at 408p, down 5.5p.

Online retailers had differing fortunes; ebookers fell back 16p to close at 556.5p while lastminute.com did better and put on 2.5p to close at 284.5p. First Choice Holidays lost 1.5p to close at 121p, and MyTravel gained half a penny to end the day at 19.5p.
