Friday, 28 October 20163 min read
Online travel giant TripAdvisor will soon begin offering travel products for Cuba.
The company has been granted a license by the United States Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control enabling it to sell hotels, flights, tours and rentals to citizens of the US and overseas.
It expects to begin sales within a few months.
"TripAdvisor looks forward to helping travelers all over the world discover Cuba’s vibrant history, people and culture as we begin the important work to make these trips possible," said TripAdvisor CEO Stephen Kaufer.
"We applaud President Obama’s policies to ease these restrictions and build relations with our island neighbor just 90 miles south of Florida,"
Currently TripAdvisor users can search for flights and accommodations for Cuba but are then redirected to non US registered sites like Netherlands based Booking.com
US travelers are nevertheless still restricted to certain categories of travel such as family visits, academic study or religious reasons.
Seth Kalvert, a senior vice president at TripAdvisor said: "We urge Congress to make these relationships permanent by passing legislation that gives US citizens the unrestricted freedom to travel to Cuba."
