TripAdvisor tells hoteliers: We wanna be your friend
Marc Charron, managing director of TripAdvisor’s new Asia Pacific office, is assuring hoteliers that he wants to be their friend.
The world’s most visited travel brand has been friend and foe of hoteliers, many of whom are suspicious of the authenticity of user reviews on the site.
The Independent in the UK, recently noted that among the 35 million reviews that now populate TripAdvisor’s listings, “there are some true stinkersâ€.
“As its listings continue to swell, things are becoming a little too noisy, and trawling through 738 reviews for a single hotel is a tiresome exercise.
“Increasingly, the skill is seeing the wood from the trees; sniffing out the haters (serial internet curmudgeons) and the sycophants (the owner’s mum), and trusting the overall wisdom of crowds,†said The Independent.
Charron, speaking at the Web in Travel conference, said TripAdvisor’s role was to inspire people to travel and user reviews of hotels were part of that process.
“We’re doing a better job of reaching out to hoteliers in a way that we didn’t in the past few years,†he said.
“We’re showing hoteliers how best to work with us…to see us as a ‘word of mouth’ channel that can work in their favour.â€
