Uber to operate electric vehicles in India with Mahindra partnership

India’s second largest sports utility car maker Mahindra & Mahindra is joining hands with Uber to bring electric powered ride sharing vehicles to Indian cities.

The companies plan to see the first Uber operated electric vehicles on the road early next year.

The aim is to initially provide ‘hundreds of electric vehicles’ in Delhi and Hyderabad before rolling out to other cities in India.

"Electric vehicle adoption is clearly gaining momentum in India. As the pioneers of electric vehicles in the country, we would like to be at the forefront, leading this change toward sustainable mobility," said Pawan Goenka, managing director of Mahindra.

It comes as Delhi was recently gripped by dangerously high levels of air pollution which had disrupted transport and even grounded flights.

The Indian government has also set an ambitious target to electrify all private vehicles by 2030.

Mahindra will supply its e20Plus hatchback and the eVerito sedan electric car models to Uber drivers.

Aligning with Uber is a key a key step for Mahindra to intensify the adoption of electric vehicles in India, Goenka said.

Mahindra, along with rival Tata Motors, just signed an agreement with the Indian government to supply 10,000 electric vehicles, though to be the world’s single largest electric vehicle order ever.
