With Spring now in full bloom, Royal Mail postmen and women have teamed up to launch the exclusive First Class Walking Guide, a video guide to some of the most stunning walks across Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Delivering mail to 27 million addresses in the United Kingdom means postmen and women walk approximately 180 million miles every year giving them unparalleled local knowledge. Six of these postal workers have used the experience gained on their respective routes, with the unique videos guiding viewers along the beautiful walks.
The video guides, many of which are hosted in partnership with VisitEngland in time for the Easter holidays, offer tourists a unique insight into walks that provide an opportunity to explore lesser known local highlights across the countries. These are accompanied by personal anecdotes from the postmen and women that know them best of all.
Capitalising on decades of unbeatable local knowledge gleaned delivering letters and parcels for Royal Mail, the postal workers turn presenters to record personal favourite walks from their own region. Across beautiful locations over Great Britain, postmen and women from Anglesey, Nairn, Newcastle, Hereford and Looe take viewers on a tour of their daily walking routes, revealing a personal journey of wonderful rambling delights and local gems.
James Beresford, Chief Executive, VisitEngland is delighted at the link-up: “These videos provide a really personal experience to help show off just a flavour of the fantastic walks available all over the country, whether people have just a few hours of spare time, a day or a weekend. We hope Britons will gain insight from the local knowledge of these postmen and women, but most importantly get walking and exploring our wonderful land for themselves.”
With seaside holidays in Great Britain and Northern Ireland up 20% and countryside holidays up 14% in 2009, the guides feature some well loved holiday locations as well as providing some great new ideas for an impromptu break. From a walk around the historic Cawdor Castle in the outskirts of Nairn with local postman Hugh McBean, to the 17th Century lighthouse in Helge Preuss’ native Anglesey, the videos bring to life the beauty and history of some of the best walks in the country.

Miranda Dodd, Head of Address Management at Royal Mail highlights the skills showcased by the postmen and women in the videos: “As part of our commitment to deliver to every address in the United Kingdom the local knowledge of our postmen and women is crucial so it is wonderful to see these workers capturing the special essence of their own local region in such an exciting way. By using correct addressing and checking the postcode, people can help our postmen and women deliver postcards from wonderful locations like these throughout the year.”
