UK tops table of visitor arrivals to Australia
The UK remains the key European market for Australia, with visitor arrival figures for the month of February showing a healthy 6.1% increase on the same time last year. More visitors arrived in Australia from the UK than from any other country last month.
70,800 visitors headed Down Under from the UK last month bringing the total number of visitors from this market to 616,600 for the year ending February 2002.
The Australian Tourist Commission believes this continued growth reflects the strength of the pound against the dollar and the success of campaigns such as the Year of the Outback initiative that has captured the attention of consumers and driven bookings Down Under. The ATC says that Australia is now seen as an affordable and achievable holiday destination in as little as two weeks and the arrival figures indicate that the appeal of Australia is continuing to grow in this market.
ATC General Manager, Europe, Tony Mayell, said: “The figures for the UK are very encouraging and these positive results are a result of the hard work and support of our many industry partners with whom we work closely.
We are now looking ahead to the future and with events such as the Gay Games and the Rugby World Cup already on the calendar, we are optimistic that arrivals will continue to grow at a steady rate.”
