Following Delta Air Lines planned pull-out, United Airlines has struck another blow to the shrinking tourism market in US Pacific territory Guam.
It is ending scheduled service from Guam to Sappora, Japan, and reducing all other Japan routes.
The Sapporo route will be suspended, effective January 15, 2018.
"After careful analysis, we have determined that this route is no longer economically sustainable. We are contacting our customers with reservations for travel beyond January 16, 2018, to offer them alternate flight options or provide refunds," United said.
Other routes to Japan will be reduced including Fukuoka, Osaka, Nagoya and Sendai.
"We are adjusting the capacity between Guam and Japan in response to the sharp decline in traffic and have added an extra flight on the Island Hopper from Guam to Honolulu via Chuuk, Pohnpei and Majuro."
United’s Guam-Manila route will also be significantly cut with the scrapping of the four times weekly morning service from January 7, 2018.
The airline’s daily evening service will continue.
United’s downsizing is just weeks after rival Delta announced a complete pull-out of the Guam market after serving it for decades.
Again, Delta cited a decline in the Japan market.
