United Airlines has settled a complaint accusing the carrier of Occupational Safety and Health Act violations for baggage handlers.
The airline will install new conveyor belts and hire a consultant to look at repetitive stress and injury hazards in baggage handling operations at its Newark Airport hub.
The consultant’s recommendations will be adopted by United within two years.
The Labor Department says more than 600 musculoskeletal injuries were recorded between 2011 and January 2015.
United will also set up a special ergonomic safety committee, and pay a $7,000 civil fine.
"The safety of our employees and customers is our top priority. We are reviewing our ergonomic practices in order to further improve the work environment for our employees," United said in a statement.
