United Airlines takes stake in biometric firm Clear
United Airlines plans to offer frequent fliers a more streamlined travel experience after agreeing to buy a stake in tech company Clear.
Clear offers traveler identity verification using fingerprints and iris scans.
It is government approved and a paid service priced at $179 annually.
United will offer it to its top tier frequent fliers for free and at a discount for all other loyalty members, starting at $109.
Clear is present at 31 airports and also at some Hertz car rental locations.
It will launch at Newark Liberty International Airport, United’s main hub as well as expand further at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport later this year.
Delta Air Lines also has a minority stake in Clear and offers discounted enrolment and membership for its loyalty members.
The Delta-Clear tie up allows travelers to enter airport lounges via a fingerprint scan.
