After a concerted effort by local media and military families, United Airlines has made Guam an exception to its suspended PetSafe animal shipping service.
Two weeks ago United halted the service worldwide after a number of mishaps, but that left US military families with pets in the lurch.
Since Delta pulled out in January, United remains the only US carrier serving far-flung Guam.
A United statement said: "Effective April 3, we are allowing an exception to our suspension of new PetSafe reservations for members of the military and their spouses, and State Department Foreign Service personnel and their spouses, who wish to travel with or ship their pets out of Guam through April 30."
United said it is only for pets leaving Guam and will not accept any new animals headed to the island.
"We understand that our PetSafe program provides an important service to military families. As the only major carrier in Guam, for U.S. military returning from assignments in Guam, United is often the only way for them to fly their pets home."
United suspended the service on March 20 to undertake a ‘systematic review’ of the much maligned program.
This followed the high-profile death of a dog forced into an overhead bin and the highest number of animal deaths in transit in the industry.
This included the well-documented death of a giant rabbit called Simon.
United said the program will return and aims to ‘make improvements that will ensure the best possible experience for our customers and their pets.’
