Upper Peninsula of Michigan crowned best destination for snow

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has bagged the top spot in the 2023 USA TODAY Best Destination for Snow poll.

It beat out several top winter sports destinations across the country, says Tom Nemacheck, executive director of the Upper Peninsula Travel and Recreation Association.

In addition to the U.P.’s best-in-snow crown, two other destinations in the U.P. took home titles from the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice travel awards.

Mount Bohemia, located in the Keweenaw Peninsula, clinched the No. 1 spot in the poll for Best Ski Resort in 2023.

ABR Ski Trails, in Ironwood, secured the No. 3 spot for Best Cross-Country Ski Resorts for 2023.

The area boasts average annual snowfall of 200 – 300 inches, 3,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails and countless destinations for winter sports enthusiasts.

This includes more than 300 frozen waterfalls.

“Between ice climbing, snowmobiling, dog sledding, snowshoeing, fat tire biking, luge racing, winter festivals and the views, we really do offer something special,” said Nemacheck.

“In the U.P., you’ll see some of the longest runs, highest verticals and deepest powder you’ll find anywhere.”

“Visitors can get the same experience — and in some cases, a better one – when they choose the U.P. as their snowy destination.”
