The US has warned Americans to be extra cautious when traveling to China.
The advisory comes as diplomatic and trade issues continue to boil over between the two countries.
However it is aimed predominantly at dual nationality US-Chinese citizens rather than general travelers.
The State Department warns that Chinese authorities arbitrarily impose ‘exit bans’ on US citizens prevent Americans from leaving China.
"US citizens may be detained without access to US consular services or information about their alleged crime. US citizens may be subjected to prolonged interrogations and extended detention for reasons related to ‘state security,’" it said.
China does not recognize dual nationality.
It advises US citizens of Chinese heritage to hold on to their U.S. passport and ask authorities to inform the US Embassy or a consulate if they experience trouble.
