US diver killed by shark in Costa Rica
An American tourist has been killed in a fatal shark attack off the coast of Costa Rica.
The attack took place about 300 miles off the coast while Manhattan finance executive Rohina Bhandari was scuba diving.
The 49-year old was attacked by a tiger shark as her group of divers ascended to the surface.
Bhandari was taken out of the water with severe bites to her legs, but later died Costa Rica’s environment ministry said.
"Upon reaching the surface, the attack on the tourist was already serious," the ministry said.
The incident took place near the remote Isla del Coco.
The group’s dive master also suffered a shark bite and is recovering in hospital.
Tiger sharks are considered to be one of the most dangerous species of shark and can reach about 15 feet in length.
