Boeing has bagged an order worth more than US$11 billion for 100 737 Max 200 jets from low cost carrier VietJet .
The fast growing carrier is less than five years old but has seen capacity growth of at least 20% in each of the last three years.
It signed the deal in Hanoi during US President Barack Obama’s visit to Vietnam and will expand the airline’s fleet to over 200 planes by the time deliveries are completed in 2023.
Currently VietJet serves about 50 routes in Vietnam and Asia including Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, China, and Malaysia.
According to CAPA Centre for Aviation, VeitJet could this year overtake national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines as the country’s biggest domestic airline.
"They seem to be extremely ambitious. They have established themselves domestically with a strong brand and high share of the market in a very quick time," said Brendan Sobie, chief analyst at CAPA Centre for Aviation.
"The aircraft will accommodate our strategy of growing VietJet’s coming international route network, including long-haul flights," said chief executive officer Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao in a statement.
