Virgin Trains has delayed the launch of its newly designed uniforms over complaints they are ‘skimpy’ and ‘see through’.
Female staff are unhappy about the transparency and fit of the new blouses, saying they expose their underwear.
Virgin has responded by handing out £20 vouchers so staff can buy ‘suitable undergarments’, reports the Daily Telegraph.
Manuel Cortes, leader of the Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association trade union, said that female staff from Virgin Trains had come to him with complaints about the ‘flimsy’ and ‘skimpy’ blouses.
Andy Cross, Virgin’s business support director, said: "It’s important that our people feel comfortable and so we will be issuing vouchers in the next few days for ladies to buy tops to wear under their blouses."
‘To allow time for employees to ensure that they have a uniform they feel comfortable in, the official launch day has been extended to May 27.’
Virgin said it expected the vouchers will cost the company a few thousand pounds, having invested £500,000 in the new uniforms.
The problems came to light during trials for the new uniform, which will be worn on the West Coast main line train and station services between London Euston and Scotland.
A Virgin Trains spokesman said: "This issue was not raised when trials started. We will deal with any problems to ensure staff are happy with what they wear."
