The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has warned visitors to Belgium to ‘continue to be vigilant’ following a major anti-terror raid last night which left two people dead.
Two suspected Islamist militants were killed in the eastern town of Verviers after they opened fire on police with automatic weapons. Another suspect was wounded before being arrested.
Officials claim the men had returned from Syria and planned attacks on police targets.
Searches were also carried out overnight in the Brussels area.
Updating its travel advice today, the FCO said: "The Belgian authorities have increased the national threat level for Belgium as a whole. You should continue to be vigilant and follow the security advice of the Belgian authorities."
