IAG group airline Vueling aims to tap quantum computing to boost operational efficiency.
The airline inked a partnership with Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC), a company specialised in the design, production, and operation of quantum computers.
OQC will support Vueling in exploring how quantum computing could help improve its efficiency.
Vueling is exploring how quantum computing could be applied across different areas of the business and hopes to develop a practical use case in the medium term.
This will focus on potential solutions to optimise route planning, aircraft maintenance, and the rostering of aircraft and crews.
Vueling will work with the Toshiko quantum computer, located in Japan, enabling the airline to run its own code and test how quantum-based approaches could be applied.
Beyond the testing phase, this initiative is also helping to build internal expertise in quantum technologies within Vueling.
Beyond faster processing speeds, quantum computing has the potential to address complex operational challenges too difficult for conventional computing systems to solve.
