Alexander the Great was a remarkable leader, with during his brief 33 year sojourn on earth he expanded Greek influence as far east as India, crushed the Persian Empire and briefly created one of the greatest empires in world history.
His life began in Macedonia which today is divided between the province of Macedonia in northern Greece and the FYRM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia).
The jewel of Greek Macedonia is Greece’s second largest city of Thessaloniki (Salonika) [Pictured right] which has had a fascinating history as Greece’s bridge between Europe and the Orient.
Thessaloniki [Pictured below; Thessaloniki’s harbour] is a vibrant city with a history incorporating Ottoman influence, the vestige of a large Jewish community which thrived for almost 2000 years until
World War II and was a major trading centre between Northern Greece and the Middle East.
Thessaloniki is a one hour flight from Athens or a six hour coach or train ride north of Athens.
