West Maui to reopen next month
Hawaii Gov. Josh Green says West Maui will reopen again to tourism next month.
Visitors will be allowed back from October 8, two months after devastating wildfires left the town of Lahaina in ashes.
Green announced the West Maui communities of Ka‘anapali, Napili, Honokowai, and Kapalua will fully reopen.
Lahaina will remain off-limits.
Other parts of Maui have remained open for tourists and many hotels and Airbnbs have been used to house FEMA workers and Lahaina residents who lost their homes.
“Beginning October 8, all travel restrictions will end, and West Maui will be open to visitors again,” Green said.
“People can resume travel to this special place and help it begin to recover economically.”
“This difficult decision is meant to bring hope for recovery to the families and businesses on Maui that have been so deeply affected.”
The Maui wildfires killed 115 people, with about 66 people still officially on the missing list.
The decision has garnered mixed reactions from residents.
Some believe it is too early while others employed in the tourism and related industries believe a swift economic recovery is vital.
