Where you’ll find the best skiing this week
What a difference a week makes in the Alps! We’ve gone from too little snow and hard, icy pistes in some resorts to almost too much snow and the threat of avalanches.
Here’s the latest roundup.
Austria
Many connections between resorts, as well as glacial resorts were either partly or completed closed earlier this week due to avalanche risk, including Hintertux, Kaunertal, much of the Arlberg region and the links between the Skicircus area.
For those areas that are open, conditions on piste will be almost as good as it can get, with plenty of freshly groomed snow giving packed powder conditions in many areas. Off piste terrain is still a risky venture given the quantity of snow that came down. A new storm is expected to deliver fresh, although far more limited snowfall.
France
The most northerly resorts, including Flaine in the Grand Massif and the Portes du Soleil region got the best of the recent snowfall. Further south the snowfall was more moderate, but Tignes stil got 20 cm, although there was nothing in the southern French Alps. Serre Chevalier, which was one of the resorts to miss out, is reporting hard, packed pistes.
Switzerland
It’s had the best of the snow so far this season but so much fell early this week that there was quite a bit of disruption to skiing as resorts had to close to make them safe.
Italy
Fresh snowfall has improved conditions in many resorts including Cervinia, although conditions in the Milky Way, which includes Sauze D’Oux, are still challenging. Resorts in the Dolomites also saw fresh now fall over two to three days, freshening up the pistes.
Andorra
More snowfall is expected this week, which will be welcome as resorts are open but coverage is patchy.
Eastern Europe
Fantastic conditions are reported in Bulgaria, both on and off piste.
North America
Great conditions are reported.
