Wildfires trigger state of emergency across California

Monday, 28 Oct, 2019 0

A state of emergency has been declared in California as wildfires continue to sweep through the region.

The emergency was declared state-wide by Governor Gavin Newsom. Around 200,000 people in the north have been ordered to leave their homes and tens of thousands of homes are under threat.

An evacuation order has been issued for Sonoma County, which includes Santa Rosa.

Utility company Pacific Gas and Electric is turning off power in a bid to stop damaged cables from triggering new fires.

Several wildfires have started. The biggest are Kincade, north of San Francisco, near Santa Rosa and the Tick Fire north of Los Angeles.

In suburban Los Angeles, the Tick Fire was 55% contained on Sunday and residents who evacuated have been told they can return home.

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said: "A number of wildfires are currently burning across California. Critical and extreme threats are likely to persist in north-central and southern California through midweek.

"A statewide state of emergency was declared on Sunday 27 October and a number of evacuation orders have been issued, particularly in Sonoma County.

"Local power companies have cut power across various locations in the state in an attempt to prevent wildfires. Details of affected areas are here. If you’re in these areas, check for updates on the US National Weather Service website and follow the advice of local authorities, including any evacuation orders.
