A Papua New Guinea airline has grounded its fleet of Dash 8 aircraft following a fatal crash yesterday in which 28 people died.

Only four of those on board the Airlines PNG flight from Lae to Madang on the South Pacific island's north coast survived the accident, which happened during a storm.

A spokesman for the Accident Investigation Commission said the twin-propellor plane came down in dense forest, 12 miles south of Madang. Flight investigators are due to travel there today.

The Australian Associated Press news agency said most of the passengers were parents travelling to attend their children's university graduation ceremony in Madang this weekend.
