Adelaide put to the security test
A national security exercise in central Adelaide yesterday involved more than 200 emergency services personnel included a mock terrorist bombing of a bus.
Security preparations for next year’s two Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings to be held in the South Australian capital were the reasons for holding Exercise Red Luminary and Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock said the exercise involved both state and federal agencies to test responses to a terrorist situation. He said, “The Australian Government is working closely with all states and territories and the private sector to ensure next year’s APEC events are as safe as possible”. “Australia has an excellent reputation for hosting major events, but we know that continued testing of our security arrangements is crucial to ensuring we can respond effectively should an attack occur.”
The exercise took place in the city’s North Terrace, the location of the SkyCity Casino, major hotels, State Parliament and city railway station and involved SA police, Metropolitan and Country Fire services, SA Ambulance Service, the departments of health, transport, energy and infrastructure and the State Emergency Service.
Adelaide will host the 5th APEC Transportation Ministerial Meeting in March 2007, followed by a Senior Officials Meeting in April 2007 and the APEC Economic Leaders meeting being held in Sydney in September 2007.
