Pilots’ unions at Air India have reported the airline over what they say is heavy-handed pressure to work beyond the maximum hours of duty.
The Indian Pilots’ Guild and Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association say pilots are being coerced to work longer flight duty, which could cause safety issues due to fatigue.
“It has come to our notice that some pilots are facing intimidation and coercion to extend their duty beyond the prescribed limits,” they wrote in a complaint to the air regulator.
It has included threats of damage to their career prospects, if they refuse, the unions said.
According to one insider speaking to the media, the issue is centred on operations at Delhi Airport.
“We believe that our duty is not only to the company, but also to the safety of the passengers and the reputation of the aviation industry,” the unions added.
“We request your immediate intervention to investigate these allegations and take the necessary steps to address the situation promptly.”
