Airline given go-ahead to weigh passengers
Hawaiian Airlines has been investigated after introducing the policy on a single flight to American Samoa.
Some claimed the action was discriminatory and six complaints were filed with the US Department of Transportation.
However, the DOT has upheld Hawaiian’s policy, which the airline says is needed to ensure safe distribution of passengers throughout the cabin.
The airline said it had excessive fuel burn on flights to Pago Pago and scrapped pre-selection of seats so that it could distribute weight evenly in the cabin.
After a six-month voluntary passenger survey the route showed an excess weight of 30lb per passenger and baggage compared to the airline’s previous estimate.
The Pago-Pago flight is the only route on Hawaiian where passengers cannot pre-select seats ahead of their flight.
