Amadeus computer glitch blamed for worldwide check-in delays
A faulty switch on a computer system caused check-in delays at several airports around the world yesterday.
The problem affected Amadeus Altea software, which is used by 125 airlines, including British Airways.
It caused delays at check in desks at airports in several countries, including Heathrow and Gatwick.
Gatwick described the situation as a ‘momentary IT glitch’ and said it did not cause any flights to be held up.
The airport said the system was back up and running after only 15 minutes, but it is believed there were knock on check in delays for several hours. It is also understood to have caused problems with some online check-in facilities.
Heathrow said it experienced ‘intermittent’ problems that meant the check-in process took longer than usual.
An Amadeus spokesperson said: "The incident was related to our internal infrastructure. As a result of the incident, customers experienced disruption to certain services.
"Amadeus technical teams took immediate action to identify the cause of the issue and mitigate against the impact on customers.
"Amadeus regrets any inconvenience caused."
