Starting today American Airlines will discontinue in-flight announcements of connecting gate information as flights prepare to land.
The airline acknowledges that relevant flight information is already accessible through passengers’ connected devices, and for some customers, the announcements were just a distraction.
"There’s a lot of ways to get that information, and it wasn’t necessarily helpful to provide that on the airplane," said American spokesman Joshua Freed.
"Some people certainly viewed it as an interruption so for those folks, we’ll stop interrupting them," he added.
Rival carriers Delta Air Lines and United Airlines stopped announcing connecting flight information years ago, while American’s merger partner US Airways never provided it.
American already displays gate information on the seat-back screens on some of its newer planes.
