American Airlines flights resume after IT glitch

Friday, 18 September 20153 min read

A FAA-imposed groundstop was lifted and American Airlines flights are back in the air following a computer glitch Thursday.

The carrier said a network connectivity disruption was the cause, affecting its website and operations at major hubs in Chicago, Dallas and Miami.

The issue caused the Federal Aviation Administration to ground all American flights to and from these airports until the fault was identified and fixed.

Operations were halted for nearly two hours, with six flights cancelled and about 300 delayed.

American spokesman Casey Norton said the glitch was not related to the ongoing American-US Airways integration work.

All US Airways’ reservations and passenger data is currently being gradually moved to American’s reservation system.

It started the transition in July and expects to complete the task – the final step to becoming a single airline – in mid October.

While the problem is resolved and all flights are back up and running, the airline said investigations continue into the exact cause of the malfunction.

Norton also said there was no evidence of an attempted systems breach by hackers.
