American Cruise Lines has vowed to improve facilities for disabled cruise guests after settling an ADA lawsuit.
It settled with the federal government which alleged it was in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
ACL has agreed to improve accessibility for wheelchair users.
The U.S. attorney’s office said the DOJ received six complaints saying American Cruise Lines ships were not wheelchair-accessible.
The cruise company also failed to provide adequate, safe boarding and disembarkation procedures for passengers in wheelchairs.
“The U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to safeguarding civil rights, including those protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act,” said Vanessa Roberts Avery, US Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
ACL has a timeline of 18 months to develop a plan to improve accessibility on its 17 ships.
“American Cruise Lines has worked closely with the government and will continue to accommodate all our guests onboard,” the cruise line said.
