And the Asian Games winner is…
KUWAIT – New Delhi and Incheon will know today which of them will host the 2014 Asian Games.
The 45 member nations of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) will make the decision during its general assembly.
There is a lot at stake today. The event is second in size only to the Olympics and broadcasting rights, advertising and tourism will generate millions of dollars in income for the host city.
New Delhi is confident “the bid of a billion people” will prove more compelling than that of the port city of Incheon, with South Korea having already hosted the Games in 2002 in Busan.
India, host of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, and backed by China, is favourite to win the OCA vote but some delegates may not be swayed by New Delhi’s offer of free air tickets and accommodation to athletes and officials in 2014.
Incheon, the third largest city in South Korea, is confident that South Korea has experience of hosting mega events, with the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the Asian Games in Seoul in 1986 and Busan in 2002.
In 2010, the Asian Games will see 45 countries compete in 39 sports in Guangzhou, China.
