Another Mother’s Day Sermon – Why Oh Why?
I attended a church today (Sunday) that had yet another message on Mother’s Day about Mother’s Day. Perhaps this seems like the obvious thing to teach about, but in my mind, it was a wasted opportunity. Why? Because, similar to Christmas and Easter, Mother’s Day is one of those rare opportunities when men – especially men – who might not darken the door of a church will do so because “Momma asked them to”.
And here, with attendance of visitors higher than usual, this church did nothing to address this group of visitors who are at least skeptical and at worst apathetic about God and His church. Instead, talking about the virtues of motherhood and what a Godly mom should be like and how we should change culture by moms influencing their children (all good things, sure) led nowhere but down a feel-good path with the slightest hint of admonition.
Where was the opportunity to speak to those who attended with Mom? Where was the chance to show current relevance for reverent Scripture? Who was affected for life change because we heard three points on how good moms are treasured?
The pastor, who I know casually, did what I hoped he would not do: he made the long time members feel good and did little to address the change needed in the lives of those “drug” to church on this annual day of opportunity.
Why oh why can’t we learn to make an old thing new instead of making an old thing boring? Why, oh why?
