Bamboo Airways plans to launch Melbourne flights
New Vietnamese airline Bamboo Airways is planning to start direct flights to Melbourne.
The fast growing carrier signed a MoU with Melbourne International Airport to launch flights from Hanoi.
It will be the first Vietnam based carrier to fly the route.
It plans to deploy Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners on the route which it hopes to start by the year-end.
The MoU was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung who is in Australia for an official visit.
Dung says the airline could launch more services between the two countries in the future.
According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, there were 387,000 tourist arrivals from Australia last year, while there is a large Vietnamese community of nearly half a million residents in Australia.
Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar Pacific both operate direct flights to Melbourne from Ho Chi Minh City.
Bamboo Airways launched operations earlier this year and now serves 27 routes.
The carrier has a goal of starting long haul services to Europe and North America.
