A resident of Bangkok is reportedly thanking his lucky stars after a piece of metal fell from an airliner and landed on his car.

According to the BBC News website, Mongkol Uthoksiri was driving home from work on Wednesday evening when a two-metre-long lump of metal from a Cathay Pacific jet fell on top of his car.

The website reports that the impact “gave him a terrible shock”.

Mr Uthokrisi, 41, who was not hurt in the incident, is quoted as saying: “I saw the plane take off and then I saw flames and debris falling, but I didn’t think it would hit my car.”

The metal was reportedly a piece of an engine unit. The aircraft, a Boeing 777, is reported to have aborted its flight to Mumbai and returned to Bangkok safely.
