Bombardier celebrates trade victory over Boeing

Canada’s Bombardier scored a stunning victory over Boeing when the U.S. International Trade Commission ruled against the US plane maker in the row over illegal dumping of Bombardier’s C-Series commercial jets.

The commission voted 4-0 in favor of Bombardier.

At the behest of Boeing, the Commerce Department wanted to impose near 300% tariffs on US orders of C-Series planes.

Boeing had argued Bombardier’s government subsidies allowed it to dump the aircraft at unreasonable low prices after Delta Air Lines became the first major US customer of the C Series with an order for 75 planes.

This irked Boeing although its argument didn’t sway the ITC commissioners as Boeing doesn’t produce a comparable aircraft to the C Series.

Delta said it was ‘pleased by the ITC’s ruling rejecting Boeing’s anticompetitive attempt to deny US airlines and the US traveling public access to the state-of-the-art 110-seat CS100 aircraft.’

Bombardier called the decision ‘a victory for innovation, competition, and the rule of law.’

Unsurprisingly Boeing was less than pleased over the unanimous decision and will continue to call out any instances of ‘Bombardier’s illegal business practices.’

"We are disappointed that the International Trade Commission did not recognize the harm that Boeing has suffered from the billions of dollars in illegal government subsidies that the Department of Commerce found Bombardier received and used to dump aircraft in the U.S. small single-aisle airplane market," it said in a statement.

"Those violations have harmed the U.S. aerospace industry, and we are feeling the effects of those unfair business practices in the market every day."
