Borders closed – but FCO advice remains the same
Israel: Unprecedented threat of suicide attacks creates concern
Israel has closed its borders with the West Bank and the Gaza Strip amid an “unprecedented” threat of suicide attacks – but UK nationals are not yet being told to avoid the country altogether.
The Independent says the Israeli army has had an “exceptionally high number” of intelligence warnings in recent days and while certain borders are often shut, total closures are extremely rare.
The FCO website states: “British visitors should keep in touch with developments and maintain a very high level of vigilance. Developments on Iraq and any further increase in regional tension could affect our travel advice. You should check it daily and follow developments closely.”
As reported by News From Abroad last week, the newspaper’s travel editor Simon Calder criticised the FCO over its advice concerning Israel.
He pointed out that Indonesia – all of its 13,000-odd islands – is “off-limits” because of a perceived terror threat, while Jerusalem and Tel Aviv are “off the danger list”, is spite of several UK citizens being killed in terror attacks on Israel.
