A young boy on vacation has been killed by a lightning strike on a North Carolina beach.
The five-year old was struck as he and his family were making their way back to their car at Carova Beach on Sunday afternoon.
The youngster suffered burns and went into cardiac arrest according to chief Ralph Melton of the Currituck Fire Department.
Emergency services performed CPR as he was rushed to Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach where he was pronounced dead.
The family, thought to be from the Philadelphia area, have not yet been named.
