Broome first to receive seasonal overseas workers
Peak national body, Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF), has called on the Australian government to expand the Pacific Seasonal Worker Pilot Scheme to tourism operators beyond Broome in Western Australia.
“This is a good first step, but the scheme should also be extended to include North Queensland with urgent consideration given to other regional areas,” according to TTF chief executive John Lee, who said many tourism businesses are facing difficulties finding staff.
“This is a big issue for tourism operators across Australia, but especially in regional areas where the pool of talent is smaller.
“While today’s announcement is great news for tourism operators in Broome, operators in the rest of the country have been left out,†Lee said.
Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson said the government is inviting workers from East Timor to travel to Broome for seasonal employment in the tourism sector.
“The seasonal worker scheme has been very successful in the horticulture industry so it makes sense to trial this proven approach in the tourism sector,†the minister said.
Lee added, “Australia cannot compete on price with other destinations in our region, so providing top quality customer service must be part of our tourism offering – expanding this pilot scheme to include more destinations than just Broome will help us do that.â€
