Buyers market like never before, writes Calder
UK: Travel editor says there are two beneficiaries in current crisis
The current state of play in the holiday industry has created a “buyers market as never before”, according to The Independent travel editor Simon Calder.
The editor and travel pundit, writing in today’s edition of the newspaper, highlights the key factors affecting the industry, concluding that there are two beneficiaries; the traveller and the domestic holiday industry. Following the news that Cathay Pacific has been operating with steadily-falling passenger numbers, Calder predicts that there will be other casualties – especially now that Toronto has been added to the WHO “blacklist”.
He writes: “Traffic to and from Air Canada’s biggest market is certain to fall, plunging the airline into more gloom. The repercussions will be felt by everyone (in the city) from taxi drivers to restaurateurs.”
Even among no-frills carriers, Calder argues, the market is slipping. While there were plenty of travellers heading from Stansted to European destinations, fares continue to fall: “My lunchtime flight to Kerry was 82 per cent full but cost only £20. Ryanair’s cost structure allows it to absorb a fall in average yields but some other European airlines cannot.”
