Call me the brains, says George
Global founder George Begg claimed he had a vital role to play for Triton, by coming up with the strategies to take the group forward.
“I’m the ideas man. I like to think outside the box and take my ideas forward to the board for them to consider,” he said.
“I prefer to work in the background and let others take the spotlight.”
Begg was a successful businessman before forming Global, but lost everything during the economic decline in the early 1990s.
“I enjoy the stresses and strains of this new challenge,” he said. “I believe you don’t fail until you give up and as I’ve never given up, I don’t think I’ve ever failed.”
He said the current climate was worrying for agents, but that they could survive and prosper.
“It’s not just the change, it’s the pace of change which is so pronounced. But for every threat, there’s an opportunity, sometimes two.”
Meanwhile, Triton director John McEwan revealed the consortium was in talks with Thomas Cook, Airtours and Cosmos about them putting on extra flights from the regions, so that agents had an alternative to Thomson, in areas like Doncaster.
“They need to be convinced about our support,” said McEwan.
