Call to name and shame illegal villas
The regent of Bali’s Badung province has called on the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) to publish a list of illegal commercial villas in Bali.
The regent also revealed that in addition to illegal villas in the Badung regency, there are also international standard hotels operating illegally.
Local media has reported that from a total of 811 commercial villas counted by the Bali Villa Association (BVA), only 425 hold the required operating permits. The remaining 386 villas are said to be operating illegally.
Bali Update (www.balidiscovery.com) reports the chairman of BVA, Ismoyo S. Soemarlan, has listed the reasons why illegal villas should not be allowed to operate commercially.
He said they made no contribution to the province in terms of local taxation and were guilty of treating their employees poorly.
The national news service Antara quoted Ismoyo as saying, “Just imagine, there are many villas without licenses erected on fertile land or on the edge of canyons, in rice fields or on the banks of rivers. Clearly this destroys the environment.â€
