Car rental shortage sees prices skyrocket
Travelers are being advised to book car rentals well in advance as a national shortage has sent prices sky-high. Rental firms, including bankrupt Hertz and Enterprise sold off older vehicles to stay afloat last year during the worst days of the pandemic, and now demand is outstripping supply in major vacation destinations.
Vehicles are now going for up to $500 a day – several times the pre-pandemic going rate. The situation in Hawaii, Florida, Phoenix, Arizona, and Puerto Rico is being described as a ‘car rental apocalypse.’
