Carnival Cruise Line’s terminal facility at Long Beach is to get a big makeover and extension.
The cruise line has signed an agreement with the city to expand to 142,000 square feet, nearly three times its current size.
It will be upgraded to handle larger ships and more passengers and will take over the pierside Geodesic Dome which was formerly a museum, as part of the expansion.
Work is expected to be complete by late 2017.
"For years we have been working toward reaching an agreement to expand the Long Beach Cruise Terminal to accommodate larger ships on the West Coast, and we’re thrilled to finally be able to move forward with our plans to assume full usage of the Dome, making Long Beach one of our largest homeport facilities," said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.
"We would like to thank the City of Long Beach and Urban Commons for their efforts in facilitating this expansion that will ultimately enhance the guest experience."
The port is currently used by Carnival Inspiration and Carnival Imagination for year-round short Baja cruises.
Carnival Miracle also sails out of Long Beach on week-long cruises to the Mexican Riviera and longer Hawaii and Alaska voyages.
