Cathay Pacific axes three US routes

Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific has axed several loss-making long haul routes including three US cities.

According to an internal memo flights to Washington DC, Newark and Seattle have been halted permanently, the South China morning Post reported.

London Gatwick, Dublin and Brussels have also been scrapped, but Cathay will still fly to London Heathrow and New York JFK.

Flights to Male in the Maldives have also been cut.

"As we have previously announced, we expect to operate well under 25% of 2019 passenger capacity in the first half of 2021 and below 50% for the entire year," a Cathay spokeswoman said.

"After careful consideration, we believe it is unlikely we will operate flights services to these destinations in the near future. We remain in a very dynamic situation and we will continue to review our flight network."

These routes were suspended several months ago as the airline was hit particularly hard early in the pandemic.

The airline has shed nearly 6,000 jobs and shuttered its regional brand Cathay Dragon.
