Celebrity cancels Alaska cruise
Technical troubles have forced Celebrity Cruises to cancel an Alaska sailing due to depart next week.
The week-long voyage from Vancouver was due to depart on September 10 but has been axed due to problems with the ship Summit.
The vessel is due to return to Vancouver today from a cruise to Seward with its speed reduced from 23 to 18 knots due to problems in its propulsion system.
Summit, which cost $350 million when it was launched in 2001, is to go into dry dock in San Francisco for repairs on September 12 and is expected to resume service on September 20.
Passengers booked on the September 10 sailing are being offered full refunds plus a free cruise. Agents are being offered their full commission plus a $50 rebooking fee per cabin when clients reschedule their cruise.
Celebrity president and chief operating officer Jack Williams said he was “truly sorry for the disruption” the cancelled cruise will cause.
He said: “Regrettably, it is important that we replace this unit in a timely manner. We will work closely with our travel agency oartners to provide our guests with the best possible alternative plans.”
