Celebrity imposes tighter smoking restrictions

Celebrity Cruises is to ban smoking in cabins and on balconies as part of a new policy from the autumn.

The line will also limit the number of public areas on board where passengers can smoke.

The tightening of the smoking rules will come into force from October 1 and comes after a poll of past passengers found the majority were non-smokers.

Celebrity will impose a $250 ‘cleaning fee’ charge on passengers caught violating the new rules.

Designated indoor areas where smoking will be allowed include the port side of one lounge on each ship and a slot machine area in the casino.

Outdoor smoking areas will also be created, including the port side of the pool deck and sundecks of each vessel, the port side of the Sunset Bar on Celebrity Century and on the Millennium class of ships, and the port side aft outside the Winter Garden on Galaxy and Mercury.

The line’s new Solstice class of ships will also follow the new restrictions.

Celebrity president and CEO Dan Hanrahan said: “We pay careful attention to what our guests have to say, and approximately 90% of them have told us they are non-smokers.

“By increasing the number of smoke-free areas onboard while still designating areas for those who smoke, our aim is to make the onboard experience as pleasant as possible for all of our guests.”
