China Southern threat forces turnaround
A threatening note left in an aircraft toilet forced the turnaround of a Sydney-bound flight carrying around 200 passengers from China.
The China Southern Airlines flight was forced to turn back when a threatening note was found in a lavatory shortly after the plane left Guangzhou airport on Monday, airline spokesman Bill Bryant said.
“There was a note in the lavatory but I don’t know anything about the detail of the note or how it was found or reported to the crew,” Mr Bryant said.
“I was not actually aware of what the content of the note was but I understand it warned of some activities threatening to the aircraft.”
“They had no option but to return and make sure the aircraft was scoured from top to bottom.”
Mr Bryant said the note was found 20 minutes after China Southern Airlines Flight CZ325 took off with what he believed was “a pretty full” passenger list.
He said the aircraft was an Airbus A330, which has a capacity of 264 passengers.
After returning to Guangzhou, passengers disembarked and were interviewed by authorities.
Mr Bryant said it took police more than two hours to screen the luggage and check the plane.
After finding nothing suspicious, the aircraft was allowed to resume its flight early on Tuesday morning and was due to touch down at Sydney Airport about 3pm yesterday.
