CLIA sees smooth sailing ahead
Near and short term, the cruise business looks strong, says the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).
The organization forecast 11.7 million cruise passengers will sail this year, an increase of a half a million over last year.
That year saw an increase of nearly 6% over the previous year, said Andy Stuart, chairman of CLIA.
Six ships launched in 2005 and there are 22 new ships on order through the year 2009, said Mr Stuart, who is also executive and vice president of marketing, sales and passenger service for the NCL Group.
Another source of growth is in homeports, which have increased by 32% in the US.
Agents picking the top cruise destinations this year named the Caribbean and Alaska first and second followed by Hawaii.
