Consensio Chalets reveals luxury ski trends
Luxury ski holiday company, Consensio Chalets revealed the results of its annual Luxury Ski Insights 2022 report, showing how habits have changed post-pandemic
The data is provided by agents and operators across Europe, based on bookings from the winter 2021 / 2022 season.
The report also highlights the most popular resorts and a movement towards more sustainable ski holidays.
Consensio’s research revealed that spend on luxury ski holidays increased slightly (75% of consumers spending more), with hotel stays down (from 25% in the 18/19 season to 19% last winter) as more opted for self-catering accommodation
Chalet stays remained constant at 60% of bookings.
Hiring private ski guides saw an increase from 30% to 40% as skiers sought more personal experiences.
The wider travel trend for longer holidays was reflected in luxury winter sports thanks to remote working becoming more accessible and travellers making more of their trips abroad by extending stays.
Flying remains the most popular form of transport at 71%, however, this decreased slightly from 78% as self-driving increased (from 9% to 16%).
EasyJet and British Airways were the most popular airlines, however, easyJet lost some market share as passengers opted for other airlines, which saw slight growth.
Train travel remains low at 3%.
The top most popular resorts for the luxury traveller were:
- Verbier, Switzerland
- Zermatt, Switzerland
- Val d’Isère, France
- Courchevel, France
- Méribel, France
For the first time, this year’s Luxury Ski Insights report highlighted approaches towards sustainability
Although 42% of companies reported are not taking any sustainability measures, 12% are now measuring their carbon footprint and 15% have set targets towards reducing emissions.
Consensio Chalets has become one of the few winter sports operators to develop a Net Zero plan and publish its per-guest carbon footprint.
It has set a target of reducing emissions by 7% each year, intending to reach Net Zero by 2035.
Ceri Tinley, MD Consensio Chalets, said “It’s interesting to see how consumer habits have evolved post-pandemic.”
This is the first time we’ve introduced questions on sustainability, the sector has a long way to go but it’s encouraging to see gradual movement.”
