The vast majority of people want to have financial protection for holidays, according to a new survey.
The 2010 ABTA Consumer Trends survey found that only 7% of people regarded protection as unimportant, with 93% deeming it as essential or important.
ABTA is seen as the guardian of financial protection, with 65% of people thinking that ABTA is either the sole source of this type of protection or the most likely provider.
The findings come as the Civil Aviation Authority revealed plans to introduce a new certificate to be given to everyone who books an ATOL-protected holiday.
The survey was of a nationally representative sample of over 2,000 consumers, quizzed in September.
Meanwhile, the survey found that people are confused about the levels of carbon emissions produced by flying.
Over 85% believe that flying contributes over 10% of global carbon dioxide emissions with 29% putting the figure at 50% or higher. In fact, aircraft contribute less than 5% of global emissions.
