A ‘joyrider’ who stole a small cruise ship and took it for a spin in San Diego Bay has been sentenced to two years in prison.
Modern-day pirate Jorge Gaviria, 27, snuck on to the Hornblower dinner cruise ship and took it out into the bay in the early hours of January 2, reports the Times of San Diego.
Employees then noticed the vessel adrift in the bay and Gaviria looking at them through binoculars, who then jumped overboard in an attempt to evade capture, police said.
Gaviria had earlier pleaded guilty to the charges of vehicle theft and setting a vessel adrift.
Judge Michael Groch also set a hearing for next month to set restitution costs.
Prosecutors had previously alleged there was $25,000 damage caused due to Gaviria’s late night antics.
